As time goes by is the first serial story of Son Chang-seob in the newspaper. It was published serially over 142 times in (대구일보) from Nov. 1959 to Mar. 1960. At that time, a newspaper was very important as a mass media.
A serial story in the newspaper was commercialized according to the newspaper's commercialization and a fixed idea which serial story in the newspaper is a popular novel came to be formed. Because of this, lots of theories for serial story in the newspaper which treated morality were published.
There're four main characters in 『As time goes by』; A moral hero Seong-cheol, an immoral reactionary Seong-ho and a modern woman Nam-hee who mediates them. And a moral woman Jin-suk who changes to be active to realize her desire little by little. The author finds morality through these four main characters. It reveals that 'morality' is out of date and 'modernity' is immoral. Such antinomy between morality and modernity come to be a main theme in Son Chang-seob's novel later and to be successful as a popular novel.
